The Most Rev. Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford, served as the celebrant of Holy Cross High School's Founders' Week Liturgy on Friday, March 23, 2018. This liturgy was the culmination of a week-long event where Holy Cross celebrated its' founders and the value of Catholic education. Several pastors from local churches were in attendance including, Fr. James Sullivan, Fr. Frederick Aniello, Fr. Joseph Donnelly, Fr. John Lavorgna, and Fr. Anthony Smith.

"I'm very glad to be here to celebrate Mass with all of you," said Archbishop Blair to the audience of students, faculty, administrators and special guests. "As we come ever closer to Good Friday and Easter Sunday, we see very clearly the love that Jesus has for each one of us. As we celebrate this Mass, we are drawn to Christ and his love revealed on the cross. We ask that we may be freed of our own sinfulness and all the things that tempt us away from that love."

"Catholic education helps students in their academic, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development," said Amadeo Rinaldi, Interim President. "The primary mission of the school is to prepare students to be people of faith and followers of Jesus Christ. As Holy Cross begins the celebration of its' 50th Anniversary over the next year, it is a reminder of the important role that our school has played in instilling Catholic values in our students."

The Archbishop's visit is two years in the making. "I met with Fr. Michael Casey '05, current Vocations Director for the Archdiocese, in 2016 to talk about enhancing the relationship with the Archdiocese and Holy Cross," said Joseph Carrah '76, Theology Department Chair. "He suggested we get in touch with Fr. Ryan Lerner, Secretary to the Archbishop and Fr. Jeff Gugliotti, former Vocations Director for the Archdiocese."

The school had a wonderful visit with Fr. Lerner in the fall of 2017. Holy Cross continued to coordinate schedules with the Archbishop over the past year.

"It was perfect timing that we were about to coordinate Archbishop Blair's schedule with our Founders' Week Litrugy," said Kyle Piatak, Director of Campus Ministry."Amongst the students, there is great anticipation. They know this is something special. Theology teacher, Ann Estrada spearheaded a lesson plan that gave the students a better understanding of who the Archbishop is and our relationship with him."

"We are in the calendar year of our 50th Anniversary," said Mr. Carrah. "This is a great way to root ourselves in the Catholic tradition for our next 50 years."

Following the liturgy, the Archbishop met with special guests, faculty and students at a reception in the Brother James Kane, C.S.C. Library Media Center.

Students came out to support the Annual Digs for Diapers Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by the National Honor Society. The entrance fee to the event was a box diapers or wipes. Approximately 1700 diapers and 2500 wipes were collected in addition to a box of miscellaneous baby items including bottles, lotion, rash creams and wash cloths. Donated items went to Greater Waterbury Catholic Charities Diaper Bank.

This event originally started eleven years ago as the Benefit Volleyball Tournament. In the past, items such as clothing and coloring books were collected and given to local charities. "For the past eight years, we have specifically collected diapers," said Caroline Flaminio '79, National Honor Society Moderator. "There was a need, and we have continued to collect those ever since."

This year, Post University contributed significantly to the tournament. "A few weeks ago, Holy Cross hosted a guest speaker for Post," said Mrs. Flaminio. "Some of their students needed to do some community service. They had to bring in diapers and wipes as the entrance fee to their event. We are very thankful for what they donated to this cause."

Several members of the National Honor Society spearheaded this effort including seniors, Kiley Harnish, Adriana Perugini, Solomina Darko, Wenting Zheng, Trey Denardo, Micaela Flaherty, Aizlyn Zupkus, Elena Tormo, Kylee McIntosh, Juliana Amaral, Meghan Booth and Maddie Smith. Maia Regan helped officiate the volleyball game with Jerry Ciarleglio '72, Director of Athletics.

"The National Honor Society students did a great job in organizing this Holy Cross tradition," said Mrs. Flaminio. "Everything ran very smoothly."

Fifty-five students made up seven volleyball teams this year. Fifteen additional students ran the event. The Spike Tysons won the tournament. Team members include: Will Greene '19, Vin Graziano '19, Jeremy Hamel '19, Kyle Moser '19, Jack Schiavone '19 and Alex Ward '19. The Notorious D.I.G. came in second place. Members include: Will Marshall '18, Will Guglielmo '18, Dylan McGovern '18, Clifton Hodak '18, Tito Nieves '18, Zyair Rountree '18, Manny Diorio '18, RJ Blanco '18, Wyatt Brennan '18, Mike Mencio '18, Tim Zupkus '18 and Elizabeth Diorio '20.

An Art/Fashion Club Update from Mrs. Rosanne Shea, Faculty Advisor

The co-presidents of the Art/Fashion Club have led the club through a very active and busy year thus far in terms of club participation. Some highlights included a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Times Square in New York, two open mic/coffeehouses and appearances at other school events such as Halloween Happening and Founders Week activities. Before our trip to the city, several of our students had never been to New York City, let alone the Metropolitan Museum, and Times Square.

Mikayla Pieksza and Solomina Darko, the club's co-presidents, have organized and facilitated this year's activities with the management acumen of true leaders. They made my job easy and took care of many of the tasks involved with producing the coffeehouses and the field trip. They proved themselves worthy of their position and would get an excellent reference from me if ever needed.

It has been traditional for the Art Club to donate much of the proceeds from fundraising activities such as the Coffee House to charities. This year was no exception. Club members donated $100.00 to The Smile Train, a charitable organization that provides cleft lip and cleft palette surgeries for underprivileged children around the world. Many of these children are stigmatized in underdeveloped countries and shunned in their communities where there are beliefs associating the birth defects with the family having been "cursed", manifesting in the facial deformity.

The Heifer Project, another organization to which the club has donated this year, received $100.00 toward the purchase and distribution of livestock to underprivileged families in order to support them in creating home businesses and to lift them up economically. Chickens, rabbits, ducks, honey bees and sheep are some of the animals that may be given to a family to help them kick start a business and break the cycle of poverty in which they find themselves.

One of the last Art/ Fashion club activities of this school year will be a photography contest within the student body with the theme, "Green". Students will be invited to submit photos for a small fee with the possibility of winning a prize for the best three photos.Winning entries will be chosen by three judges from the faculty and proceeds will go to a local animal shelter.

Twenty-one professionals from a variety of disciplines visited Holy Cross High School for Career Exploration Days. They were on hand to speak to the students about their career trajectories and to give advice to those interested in pursuing similar fields. Many of the guests were alumni, parents and friends of Holy Cross.

"We look for as many opportunities as possible to connect our students with the rest of our Crusader community," said Catherine Xeller, Director of Guidance. "At this event, all of our current students were able to speak with top notch professionals in their respective professions. It was an amazing and informative afternoon for our entire student body."

Guest visitors included: Phil Mongelluzzo (MD), Carole Cole & Kathy Gannon (Physical Therapists), Jeffrey Fryer (Accountant), Mike Mason (Accountant - Special Olympics), Andrew Maloney (Consultant), Jane Porter Gigasky (Pharmaceuticals), Keith Sullivan (CPA), Bill Stevens (Attorney), Filomina Hulstruck(CFO), Deanna Riggi(Digital Marketing Management), Christopher Riggi (Special Agent with IRS), Peter Morgan (Cyber Bullying), Louisa Printz (Safe Haven), Allegra Itsoga (NGO-Woman's Rights/Issues), Jaime Arute(Law Enforcement), Jonathan DeRose (Education), Christopher Poulis (Education), Erik Parks & Brandon Dufour (Business), Nikki Maletta (Nursing), Mark Perron (Production) and Edward DaPonte (Retired Police/Criminal Justice).

Many students were enlightened and educated through this day. Madison Smith '18 walked away with some career advice. "I want to be an accountant," she said. "I spoke with Mr. Fryer, and he told me which schools had the best accounting programs. It was definitely an eye opening experience."

"I spoke with two men who trained cops in self-defense.," said Will Marshall '18. "That was my favorite session. These men offered classes for civilians to protect themselves against home invasions and other attacks. They gave examples of how to disarm their attackers."

"Law enforcement was different than I thought it would be," said Joe Bonvicini '19. "I always thought it was mostly about the things you read about or see in the news. I was told that seeing arrests with handcuffs or shootings were rare occurrences. Many in law enforcement deal with day to day things like traffic issues."

Student-athlete, Madison Smith '18 was recently honored with the Waterbury Exchange Club Youth of the Year Award at the Thirteenth Annual Dr. Lawrence J. Shea Memorial Awards Banquet. This award is open to all students who attend a Waterbury school.

As part of the application process for this award, Madison wrote an essay centered on Strengthening America through Socially Responsible Communities. She read the essay at the Awards Banquet.

"I focused on the importance of service and how Holy Cross has given me so many opportunities to give back to others," said Madison. "I also refer to a quote by former President George H.W. Bush, where he talks about everyone being a ray of light. Everyone has their own light in their community, and one action can have a huge impact."

In her essay, Madison writes, "Service to others has always been important to my family. Holy Cross has provided me with a new outlook on what it means to serve the community...Service to others is not only about contributing to society, but it is also personally rewarding in knowing that I can change someone's day with a simple act. If more Americans felt this way, our country could be healed."

Madison is one of Holy Cross's strongest student-athletes and leaders. She is active in Student Government, National Honor Society, athletics and Holy Cross Student Theatre. Academically, she currently ranks fourth in her senior class. She won the Fairfield University Book Award for Academic Excellence and received Academic Excellence Awards in Spanish and Western Civilization. She has also achieved many athletic successes for Girls' Soccer, Girls' Outdoor Track and Field and Boys' Swimming and Diving. She is also very committed to community service and has volunteered her time for countless projects. She is active with Special Olympics and Crusade for a Cure.

She has also served in many leadership roles including Girls' Varsity Soccer Captain and Dance Competition Team Captain. She is also active on the Senior Committee, Student Government and the Athletic Council.

"Being chosen for Youth of the Year is a huge honor bestowed upon Madison," said Catherine Xeller, Director of Guidance. "She represented Holy Cross tremendously with her poise, professionalism and maturity at the event. Her essay was beautifully written and embodied so much of what it means to be a Crusader. She presented eloquently and captivated the audience with her story. Madison's devotion to her school and more importantly, service to others is impeccable."

Awards and scholarships are presented at The Dr. Lawrence J. Shea Awards Banquet to students and community leaders. The dinner is named in honor of Dr. Larry Shea, one of the founders of the Exchange Club of Waterbury, and its first president.

This fall, Madison will attend Endicott College as an accounting major.

Wen Ting Zheng '18 to Attend MIT

Holy Cross High School is proud to announce that Wen Ting Zheng '18 will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the fall. She was accepted through Early Action in December 2017 and made her final decision to attend this past spring. She will officially begin in late August for pre-orientation programs.

"I chose to attend MIT because my major will be in Bio-engineering," said Wen Ting. "MIT seemed to be a logical choice for that field. I also like the location. There are several opportunities for research internships in the Boston area."

Wen Ting arrived at Holy Cross as a freshman with the goal of getting into a top tier college. "Holy Cross provided me with the opportunities and support to get into this school," she said. "I especially like the small class sizes. The teachers focus on what the individual student needs. (AP Calculus teacher) Mr. Mulhern gives up his free block to help us."

Wen Ting is an exceptional academic scholar. This past year, she took AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Psychology, AP English, an online AP Chemistry course and a college-level Environmental Science course. She is a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and a recipient of the Coca-Cola Scholarship.

"This was a huge honor," said Catherine Zeller, Director of Guidance. "Wen Ting is one of 150 Coca-Cola Scholars who will receive a $20,000 college scholarship. We are so proud of her and what she has brought to our school community."

Wen Ting also held leadership positions in National Honor Society and Helping Hands, a community service club. She was also instrumental in starting the Girls Who Code club. "I got a group of girls together who were interested in coding. After doing some research, I wrote a proposal and submitted it to (Director of Student Activities) Ms. Dwyer and the school Administration. They were really excited about the mission of the club."

She learned the importance of time management early on in her high school career to handle such a demanding course load and schedule. She credits her teachers and school community for helping her.

"My friends and teachers have always made themselves available to me," she said. "Our school community is filled with people who support each other. I have built some strong relationships in the time I was here. I am sure that will carry over for the rest of my life. Some of my friends are also going to college in Boston. I am sure we will stay in touch."

Brendan Lynch '18 Signs Letter of Intent to University of Saint Joseph

Congratulations to Brendan Lynch '18 who will participate in Division III Swimming this fall at University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford where he will major in Business.

Brendan started swimming when he was nine years old at the Watertown Park and Recreation. At the time, he was both an active swimmer and basketball player. Upon arrival at Holy Cross, his coach, Mary Racevicius, immediately saw his potential as a swimmer.

"She really focused on me and helped me out a lot," said Brendan. "As time went on, I made some of my best (swim) times, particularly in the last two years."

Being part of the Boys' Swimming and Diving Team is a Lynch family tradition. His brothers, Connor '13, Devin '15 and Tim '16 swam for Holy Cross. Brendan, however, saw four NVL Championships with his team during his time as a student Crusader. "That first win was a memorable one," said Brendan. "It feels great to be a part of this team. All of the hard work that we put in paid off."

The University of Saint Joseph also holds a special place with the Lynch family. Brendan's mother (and Holy Cross faculty members) Lyz Lynch is an alumna of the school. "We knew they were going co-ed this coming fall," said Brendan. "The swim coach reached out to me. When I visited the campus, it felt like home. I am really looking forward to being a part of their team."

Even though Brendan graduates from Holy Cross in a few weeks, the school will remain a huge part of his life. "Holy Cross gave memories and friends that will last a lifetime and an education that will help me in the future."

Nicole Madrid '19 to Participate in UCONN's High School Student Research Apprentice Program for Dentistry

This summer, Nicole Madrid '19 will participate in the High School Student Research Apprentice Program, sponsored by the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. This six-program provides students with research experience in one of the basic sciences or clinical laboratories. Nicole will participate in the Dental Program.

"I am very excited for this," said Nicole. "Since this is a research lab program, everything will be very hand's on. I will work on a lot of experiments. Through this program, I want to see if I prefer the research side of dentistry or the hands-on side where I work directly with people."

Nicole recently finished UCONN's Mini Clinic Program. She sat through lectures from doctors and dentists of all specialties. Great advice was passed down. "They told us how to focus on our studies, what to follow and how to get into dental programs," she said.

From an early age, Nicole knew she wanted to be an orthodontist. Her interest in science and math blossomed in the eighth grade. She learned many lessons in chemistry and biology that could be applied to her future profession. "My mentor told me that dentistry has a lot to do with chemistry. It helps to know the chemical make-up on what you can use and base that on your patient's history. Also, biology helps with identifying certain diseases that a dentist can see in someone's teeth."

Nicole has already started looking at colleges including UCONN, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart. However, she is still early on in the search process. She plans to major in BioMedical Sciences.

Holy Cross High School's 47th Annual Commencement Exercises were held on Sunday, June 3, 2018. Diplomas and special awards were distributed to the Class of 2018. Heartfelt speeches and parting words were shared by Board members, administrators and students.

Vice President for Student Life Michael Giampetruzzi '95 began the ceremony with a moment of silence for beloved faculty member and former President Margaret Leger, who passed away in early May. He shared a quote that Mrs. Leger delivered at the 2017 Holy Cross Graduation where she described the special uniqueness of the Crusader community. "We are a community of faith. We are teachers and students together, experiencing prayer and fellowship, where we grow in our commitment to God, one another, the church and the local community."

"This is a momentous occasion," said Amadeo Rinaldi, Interim President to the graduating class. "You have reached an important milestone. You have completed one stage in your education and now you are ready to move on to the next one. As you leave Holy Cross, look forward to the future with courage and determination. It is another opportunity to further broaden your horizons, make new friends and meet new challenges."

"I'm sure it seems like yesterday that you were taking the Entrance Exams or walking into school here on your first day of class," said Board President Jeffrey M. Fryer '87. "Look where you have come. It is amazing...Each of you has had an amazing journey and your experiences at Holy Cross have helped shape you into the young men and women that you have become. We are so proud of everything you have accomplished. We can't wait to see what you will achieve in the years to come."

Caitlin Deher '18 delivered an emotional Commencement Address centering on her personal struggles and how she eventually overcame those challenges. She encouraged her fellow students to follow their paths and expect the unexpected. "The most important thing I can leave you with today is to enjoy what is and not worry about what may occur sometime later on in life. Be at peace with the unknown and relish in the now."

Several students were honored during the ceremony including:

  • Wen Ting Zheng '18 and Caitlin Kinsella '18 received the Valedictorian and Salutatorian Award for maintaining the highest and second-highest grade point average, respectively.
